Forty Martyrs of Sebasteia
   Saints killed in 320 in Sebasteia (q.v.) during the reign of Licinius (q.v.). According to the legend recounted by Symeon Metaphrastes and other hagiographers (qq.v.) they were Christian soldiers who refused to renounce their faith. They were stripped naked and herded onto a frozen pond, where most of them died of exposure. Those remaining were executed.
